ok my brother got a ps3 from wal-mart and 3 people there said that the ps3 said that the ps2 games will work on the ps3. is that true? if so does anyone know why his ps3 wont play ps2 games? anything i can do?

your ps2 games should work in the ps3. although, my friend had to do a small update to his ps3 to play them.

Yeah playstation 2 games do function on the ps3. ALthough the 60 gigabyte model has more compatible games, if he got the 40 or the 80 gigabyte ps3, there are still many many games he can play from the playstation 2, but some might not work, its still a pretty cool feature being able to play ps2 games on the ps3, considering the ps2 has over 5000 games

thats weird it definitely plays ps2 games, maybe you need to play a ps3 game on there( a new one) because they have all recent updates pre loaded onto them so you will be able to have the most up to date software for the computer.

i think only some of the ps3′s play ps2 and ps1 games.
it might be the 80gb one that does, but im not sure.
if they told you it would work on that, you should be able to get an exchange for the type it works on

Not all PS3′s will play ps2 games. Some of the newer models were built without backwards compatibility. Here’s a link to show which systems can play ps2 games.

Yes ps3′s play ps2 games. His ps3 most likley won’t play his ps2 games because the ps3 is very sensitive. If the game are a little sratched up yuo can go have them buffed at gamestop or something. It’s only like $20 per 5 disks.

It depends on which ps3 you purchased. The cheaper ps3 with less memory will not play ps2 games, while the more expensive one will. If you did get the cheaper one and you really want to play ps2 games, you can do something. You can download “PCSX2″ for your computer. This is a ps2 emulator, and then you will be able to play ps2. my cousin has one and I went with him when he bought it. He asked if you can play ps2 games on it. The salesperson said that most of the newer ps2 games WILL play on the ps3 and most of the older games will NOT play in the ps3. So it really just depends on the game he has.

i remember hearing that the first models were more geared towards playing the older games. but, my guess is, you need to get online with your console to update it. doing this will make it compatible with “some” Ps2 games.

If he bought a 40GB model…it WILL NOT play ps2 games, as it does not offer backwards compatability. The 80GB model has compatability with about 80% of ps2 games….the only models that have FULL backwards compatability are the 60GB and 20GB models. If you do have the 40 GB model…try and return it to walmart and tell them you were misinformed by their staff.

The 40 gb Ps3 which is probably your brother got doesnt play ps2 games. This is because only the 80 gb PS3 plays them. That’s why its so expensive. If i you cant afford the ps3 games you should return it. However, since hd dvds arent in competition with blu-ray, its possible that the PS3 games price will drop a tad bit.

that is one of the problems with the next gen consoles (xbox 360 wii ps3) only certain games from previous consoles will work. but, if you really want to i believe that there is a way to “chip” your ps3 to make ps2 games work on, it does void the warranty though because it is technically hacking with the firmware

thats because its not true. you need a ps3 game because its a newer version so it doesnt play older version cds.

Well damn they liked their ***** off. you must have gotton the 40gb because that is the only one without backwards capability meaning it doesnt play ps2 or ps1 games. Any other ps3 system (80,60,or 20 GB) has Backward capability.

He must have bought a 40 gb model which doesn’t allow backwards capability, ps2 games don’t work on it. The 60 gb model plays ps2 games but has been discontinued so you can only buy it 2nd hand now.
So i recommend getting a 60 gb model if his ps2 games are really important to him and 40 gb model if he wants to sell and get new ps3 games
